"Beach Break"
"Beach Break"
oil on panel
19 x 30 inches
2021

I'll admit, I've never surfed -- but I wanted to make a painting about the only board sport that I've never tried, I grew up near the ski hills, not the beach. However, I do have some odd quasi nostalgic "fernweh" for surfer stuff, because I can only imagine how great it must have been to wind up in California in it's prime and grow up paddling out on beautiful mornings. This painting is partly from my imagination, but is based on "Folly Beach" near Charleston, with an old reference photo of mine for it's beach elements. The sky was photographed this summer over a farm field in upstate, NY and the board was invented entirely.
